my 1984? 115 johnson ob has been sitting for a while and i finally got the chance to crank it up. of course i hooked the water hose up to the lower unit and the little hole at the bottom was flowing water.

about 4 minutes after i cranked it up the "constant" alarm sounded and i cut the engine off. i let it cool down and cranked it up. i placed my hand behind the exhaust and no water was spraying out of the exhaust.

i have not kept it running long so i'm guessing the alarm or ground is ok

does this mean i have a bad water pump??

any other ideas?

is there a way to test the cooling system??

is there a process i can utilize to determine what went wrong.

thanks in advance

Re: Overheated???

There is only one way to tell if a water pump is working...put it in the water. A hose isn't good enough because it is forcing the hose pressure through the system. There is one exception: if the hub in the impeller is spun, even hose pressure won't go through. That may be what you have.
