Need help! I have a Yamaha F15MLHA 2002. While running, water pump broke. Engine over heated. Shut it down, Used trolling motor to get in. Replace water pump now engine won't start. Any help as to what to check on a previously very reliable engine? Thanks

Re: Overheated, won't restart

If severely overheated you could have blown head gasket, hope you have not warped the head too. Will need to re torque head if that works or replace a new head gasket.

Are there indications of a head gasket being blown? Engine oil seems ok?

1. Pull the plugs and do a compresson Test -- will save you a lot of wondering what broke..
Head ,, head gasket ,, rings ,, or worse !!

Re: Overheated, won't restart

Personally have blown many head gaskets on portable engines due to severe overheat caused by kelp sealing leg water intakes at wot frying thermo as well. If your engine has smoked worst than an indian definitely you have ruined the head gasket, check if you have also fried thermo and head along. Your engine will not restart because has water inside combustion chambers and pluigs ara arleady water fouled.

Once head is removed have a look if have damaged cylinder walls too, other issue to check, place straight edge of metal ruller border to border across both head cylinders cavities, edge must be paralell and evenly across head, if with slight head height difference, you have a warped head, will need to file evenly yourself or send to a machine shop to do the work, if it's severely warped and once fille corrected you'll need to place a thicker gasket to compensate compression or buy a new head.

If it overheated and the alarm came on, then you shut it down right away, then should be minimal damage to internals. I'd be looking around for other possible reasons for it not starting. Check plugs, spark, fuel flow, carbs, etc., then crank it up! Good Luck!

Robert, it's only a portable 15 HP engine, small engines usually don't have overheat alarms and boater does not mentions either, probably just low oil indicator...
