I had a little trouble with my big inline 6 merc a couple weeks ago, it overheated very temporarily when kelp clogged the water intake. I pulled the leg and replaced the water pump just incase then got it running. However it now occassionally cuts out, just dies as if the switch has been thrown. After a few minutes I can get it going again, but after a coulple more minutes of normal operation it will again just cut out. Could this be the power pack damaged by the overheat? Is there anyway to test a powerpack? Could it be something else?
Thanks
Ohh the motor is a 1966 950SS keichoffer tower of power

I would start with the ignition switch. Is there any play in the key?

Possibly look for a shorting wire on the engine aswell..might have burnt through.

TMD

key and controls in good shape, i have been looking at wiring on the motor and everything looks to be in good shape, it got hot but not hot enough to burn thru wire insulation. I dont know how to test the power pack tho and i understand they can be susetable to high heat, is there anyway to test it or should i just go ahead and replace it?

In time, those power packs or switch boxes can go out occasionally due to over heat from the motor.
Try this little troubleshooting guide. If one plug is not firing, you have a bad switch box, or power pack, whatever you wanna call it. If no plugs are firing, the problems the stator thats under your flywheel.
