First I wanted to say thanks to all the great information, over the past 5 years I have been mostly a lurker and found lots of information here. It?s my first place to look when I have a question. Unfortunately this is my first time to enter a post and unfortunately not under good circumstances.

Engine Details:2000 Volvo Penta 4.3 GL, Fresh water cooled

First the history, running down the lake pulling kids on the tube when all of a sudden engine noise gets very load and lots of smoke come pouring out the back. I immediately shut down. I open the hatch and once the smoke clears, lots of white smoke smells like burning rubber and plastic, I find one of the vent hoses is touching the starboard side manifold (cyl 2,4,6) and has melted, the rubber bellows from the high rise manifold to the elbow has ruptured and is burnt, and the cast elbow has gotten hot enough to burn most of the paint off. The rest of the engine is cool, and the temp gauge never read above 175. Trying to see why no water is flowing to the manifold I pull off the ?? line from block to manifold to find a chunk of debris is blocking the outlet right at the engine block. I clear the blockage hook things back up and limp back to the dock. We make a run to the marina to get a replacement bellow, I also got a replacement impeller thinking it must have fragged causing the blockage. I first replace the bellow and then check the impellor, However impellor is fine (it was only 2 years since replaced). I hook things back up hoping all is good, still no start, After some additional diagnosis I find that cyl 2,4 have some water in them. Figuring It probably just got sucked in after I removed the blockage and bellow was split causing water to shoot out while idling back to the dock. I dry things out, do a quick oil change (figuring this will be one of a couple to get all the water out), engine fires up (On muffs in driveway) and runs like a champ, Idles well and sounds good. Shut things down and prepare to do another oil change. After letting it sit I notice oil level increasing and oil is milky again (more than just because it picked up some of the previously contaminated oil) I pull plug #2 and more water in it. So obviously something internal has let go from the over heating.

At this point I am thinking it could be any number of possibilities of manifold, seals, Head, head gasket or block. (I have read lots of the previous posts here and all of these are mentioned as possibilities) I have not had time to do a compression test yet to make sure we don?t have major lower end damage or to tell if it is a blown out head gasket. My question is what are the chance it is just manifold seals or a cracked manifold? Do any of my symptoms or events lead you to think one more than another? What are some of the other tests I could run without doing a full tear down to determine my head is not cracked or a bad head gasket? The blockage looked like it could be a piece of impellor or seal any suggestion on what to look at next? Replacing a manifold is something I can tackle, however if it gets into the Head, and block this more than I want to tackle. Thanks for any help you may have.
