overheated engine beside pump what else could be wrong?

my water pump gave way and I overheated my 96 48HP johnson outboard. repalced pump, and replace a melted temp unit. The engine seems to want to start but won't any suggestion on what I should check?

Check your compression to start with.

Compression first. It's easy to blow a head gasket on an overheat especially if the temp sender was melted.

Very easy. Just make sure you check the head for warpage.
