overheat alarm

my overheat alarm keeps coming on and off intermittently for no appearant reason. Most of the time I can kill the engine and start it right back up and the alarm is gone,.....MOST of the time. This is a 1984 30hp Evinrude. I recently replaced the water pump and the enigine pees like a racehorse. It is not a oil injected so its not an oil alarm. I believe the alarm itself maybe faulty or shorting. Is there a way to test this theory? And if it starts to make me more crazy than I already am, is there a wire in the control box that I can snip to silence the little bugger??

Thanks a ton

Re: overheat alarm

I have a 89 120 HP Evinrude so it should be similar to yours. On mine there is a tan wire that comes out of the thermostat housing. That tan wire is what grounds out the alarm making it sound. If you disconnect that wire, the alarm should stop sounding. Run the engine for awhile and see if you get the alarm. If the alarm does not sound you have a faulty temperature switch. If the alarm continues to sound, then check other sensors - if there are any. Mine also has a sensor on the oil tank. Is the alarm a constant buzz or does it "beep"?

Do not just snip wires to silence the alarm. It is there for a reason.

Re: overheat alarm

We know what you're thinking -- "As long as it has a good water stream from the tell-tale I'm ok". That is simply not true. An engine can and will overheat with a powerfull tell-tale. Do not defeat the alarm. Fix it.

Did you replace the T-stat when you did the water pump?

Re: overheat alarm

An easy way would be to buy some thermosticks & check temp...maybe all is well and you're running too hot...hence the alarm. Temp range I believe should be between 125 & 163....the latter being too hot!
