I just finished a restoration of my 81 glastron. My sig has all the pictures if you want to see it. Here are the particulars.

New 350 with a 252H Comp cams marine cam, aluminum Edelbrock performer intake, and about 9.75:1 compression. Loads of torque with this thing.

I am noticing alot of what I call prop slip under heavy acceleration. From a dead stop the engine revs to about 4000 rpm and then settles down once on plane like a jet boat does. Also when I am cruising and hit it, she raps up and then catches. It kind of reminds me of the old cartoons when someone is going to run, they just stayed in place for a second and then took off. At the upper end I am touching 5000 rpm at WOT. My drive is a standard alpha with a prop that looks stock (was on the boat when I bought it) and the number starts with an A and ends with 19. it is not black and looks like it has been worked over and had lips added to it.

So here is the first question. I have a clever prop with alot more pitch, but will not clear the little trim tab. I want to try it but I need to remove the little tab. Can I take it off? Ok, the second question is about the pitch. Should I add more pitch to get more bite?

Everything might be fine, and this thing really moves, but I want to make sure.

I have ground a groove in my trim tab before...didn't noticeably effect anything.

Also, I imagine that is a 19p Prop...Could be why you are hitting such high RPMs.
Try a higher pitch.
The only time my prop has ever done that is when it was damaged, it started to vent at full throttle around 3400 and you couldn't accelerate anymore

I will take some pictures of it later today and post them. I do not mind getting a new prop, but I just want to make sure that is not normal.

sure looks like that prop has been worked over. I would be wondering about integrity with the pitting that is shown there. As for pitch, it appears to be 19 overstamped on a 17, so most likely repitched at some time or another. may want to try something in a 21 range or so

Damm nice rebuild...i applaud you....Yes you can drop the tab...heres a tab made for your situation.... http://www.iboats.com/Mercury-Marin...32584238--**********.985266253--view_id.39250

You might have to fabricate one for that drive...As to the cleaver they dont work out that well on a I/O your leg is running to deep for the design..But you could bolt up a arneson drive..:D..

I assume that motor runs what 350/400 hp on a 19' glasstron..That poor litte 19 has seen better days and has no chance of working with your set up..If i were you id find a 22..23p alum prop as a refernce point..something cheap but in solid conditon and do a run @ wot use gps to determine speed and post back the results... maybe a 24 or 25 if that motor turns 350 or more didnt check it out enough

Some things to think about...You have a lot of new power and your gearing in that leg was not geared for that hp and boat...your under geared i think. So do you want to setup the boat up for top speed aka a 3 blade or low amd midrange performance..4 blade...Either way im thinking its going to do 60 plus

:D That 252 comp cam sure is a lumpy bugger did you ever resolve that or is that the way it runs..:p Im a bit jealous here...that boat and motor combo should be a kick in the @@@...when you get it up and running be careful of chine walk...

Thanks alot man. The motor that came with the boat was a 305 and so the leg is geared the same. I am going to post some video in a while with some questions about my new prop. I picked one up today.

I am having an installation issue with my new prop. The video explains it well.

That drive is a bit old...you may have to start fresh with a new prop and thrust washer designed for that leg.....Theres no telling what combo you have on there....If that engine is a fresh 350 with a modern cam and intake...it will take at least a 22p alum

A early 80 305 with there old smag cams maybe made 185....A fresh 350 with a modern cam and intake should do 300-350 almost double the power..Is that a 302 block or a new 350

Aka 185 hp 1.8 gearing....300 1.5 gearing big difference
