Greetings All,

I have an 1987 Evinrude VRO 140 v4. It has been a great motor but recently, I have had a problem with using a lot of oil. I went through 1 gal of oil to 30 gals of gas. I read a lot about this type of problem in this forum (great help I might add). I have come to the conclusion that, it is either fuel restriction or a bad VRO. When I was checking the fuel filter for any restriction, I noticed it had fuel mixed with two stoke oil. Now the way I see it, it should be raw gas. Could this still be the result of a fuel restriction or is this a bad VRO?

Thanks for any help on this,

Darrell

I'm betting that you have a failed seal between the fuel and oil section of the vro pump.New or rebuilt pump,or blank off the oil inlet and use it as a 50:1 pumper. If you choose to do the latter you'll need to disable the vro alarms.

The dealers use to carry a rebuild kit that included parts for the fuel half and air motor diaphragm, but did not include this seal or oil half piston.Go figure.New vro pump is around $225.My local dealers won't touch a rebuild job on one.I believe forum memeber clanton has a lead on a place to get a vro rebuilt for cheaper than a new one.Perhaps he'll be along shortly.

I had the same problem on a 1986 140 evinrude about 6 months ago. I turned out to be the pump and it was not rebuildable. because the piston shaft had broke, had to replace. I didnot find this out till I sent it to dfi technologies, I believe the webb site is the same. You may try looking this up on a past thread, thats how I found it. It was mentioned several times all with great results. It's rebuilt with better maaaterials than oem. Good luck, I believe they rebuild for about $150.00, if it's rebuildable.
