over heating problems

hi got a 1988 mastercraft pro 190 with a mercruiser chevy 5.7 v8 model 260.
just about to fit a new thermostate, but dont know weather the original thermostate was fitted correctly as it can be fitted in 2 different parts of the thermostate housing, ither the lower or the upper part of the housing. could anyone please tell me the correct way thanks neale.

It may be the thermstat, but did you also check the impeller in the raw water pump?
Head up to the Adults only sticky at the top of the forum, and download a Mercruiser service manual for your engine. It will show you the thermostat and the raw water pump.

hi been trying to find a sevice manuel to download, but cant seem to find it anywhere, would you know a site where i could down load one, or have a link to download one thanks neale.

umm tryed to download one, and every time i do it gets between 20mb and 45mb it sends me a message saying they are corrupt
