That hot light is controlled by the temperature sender on the cylinder head. Since there is one on each head, they are connectedd together, and connected to the System Check gauge. An OEM service manual has tests for all the alarms, and might be a good investment. I cannot think of any reason the hot alarm would be on every other time. You might disconnect the temp sensor wires one at a time and see if it is a short in the wire in the harness or a sensor.
BTW - The port temo sensor also controls the Quick Start feature. When you disconnect it, I do not think the motor will come out of quickstart.
