Friend just had this problem. The drive shaft from the engine to the out drive just stripped the splines.
Once he removed the engine and out drive, it would appear that they had not been greased in a LONG time.

I have tried to see where this fitting is but can not find it. It is behind the engine where the drive comes out of the engine.

I have a 2001 Monterey 302CR with twin 5.0L VP and this is really bugging me. Does anyone know if the VP has these fitting and if so where they are. How do you grease them and how much grease do you give them? Can you put in too much and blow a gasket?

I have had 5 boats and all were I/O but never knew/heard of this problem.:(

HELP!!

Re: Output Splines

Assuming you are referring to the coupler splines bolted to the flywheel. The only way to grease them is to remove the outdrive and put grease on the splines. You should also be checking the alignment, and lubing the gimbal bearing and ujoints (if they have zirks), all yearly.

One note, if the engine is out of alignment and not greased, that accelerates the failure.
