I replaced my water pump, put the out drive together, and had it together for at least 3 weeks with no oil in the driveway. I was outside working on our Seadoo, and I noticed oil leaked out of the weep holes of lower unit, and looks like near the shift linkage. The out drive has not seen water since last year, and i had no water in the oil when I changed it.

When I filled the out drive, it was in the tow position, and I filled it until it appeared at the upper vent. I checked the level with the dipstick located on the top of the out drive, and it was a bit full.

My guess is that I blew an oil seal, but looking at the parts diagram, I am not sure which one.

I am ok playing with oil, and gears etc as long as I don not need any special tools. I have a good set of tools, but no Mercruiser tools. The shop is backed up 3 weeks :(

Thanks all for the apst and future help.

Sorry to hear about your issue, but to work on an outdrive takes some special tools, some you can make but many it just won't work.

The big thing is you need a manual, so you either need to go here http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html and look thru it,or find/buy one. You didn't mention which drive you have, Gen 1 or 2
Here is a Gen 1 http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Sounds like the shift shaft seal. Had same problem last season with oil coming from same location. I also had water in lower unit oil. If you've removed lower unit to replace impeller the shift shaft seal should be an easy job. Also, if I remember correctly there two seals below the impeller housing to check. I just replaced them anyway since I was already in there. It was a pain getting them out.
