outdrive kicks out of gear

sometimes, when in rough water (2-4's) the outdrive seems to come out of gear - the shift lever has not moved, but the engine revs up and forward progress is halted. If I shift to neutral, then forward, everything then works ok.
Is it possible the shift cable is not adjusted correctly and barely puts it in gear and, when the back end of the boat rises because of the rough water, the load on the prop decreases and allows it to come out of gear?
Any ideas?

Gadget, sounds like what you are experiencing is a spun hub. Pull the prop and look at the engine end. The prop has a rubber insert that will spin if an underwater opject is encountered with the prop. Supposed to protect the lower unit gears and such.

If you can see what appears to be little balls of rubber around the rubber hub, it's probably spun. To be sure, make a mark, yellow marker or something that will not wash off, and draw a line from the rubber hub to the metal of the hub. Run the engine in the water and if the same thing happens, hi engine revs but no forward speed, check the hub hash mark you made. If the alignment has slipped, spun hub. You can get it rehubbed pretty reasonable.

Thank you - that sounds like a more plausible explanation than mine - will check it out
Jim
