I have two problems with my '85 Alpha:
1. My outdrive now makes a rattle when the motor is running. It sounds familiar to the noise it would make when you turn the wheel all the way to one side or the other.
2. My hinge pin grease fitting does not work and I am unable to get grease in the fitting. As a result the drive is difficult to move up and down. It takes someone holding the trim buttons and someone moving the drive up and down to work it loose. After that it traveles very slowly. I have tried to remove the hinge pin but broke one removal tool and don't want to use an allen key for fear of stripping the pin.
Any suggestions?

Re: Outdrive help

1. sounds like you need to replace gimbal bearing ie: the noise ...
2. did you try taking out the grease fitting and cleaning out the old grease and spraying WD40 in to grease canal... when in doubt a little Heat (and i mean a little) will always work.
I used a 1/2 allen with a pipe on mine - the fit was tight and so was the bolt !! once you break it free it will turn easy.
Good Luck and Welcome Aboard - Bruce

Re: Outdrive help

I have remove the fitting and used wd-40, mystery oil, etc... I also heated the pin to no avail. Ironically the gimbal bearing noise came after I heated the hinge pin... I broke a removal tool trying to remove it with a ratchet & a pipe. I tried the allen but it seemed like it would slip strip the pin. I have tried all of this with the drive on. Should it be done with it off if I am only doing one side?

Re: Outdrive help

I broke to many of the POS merc tools. I use a cut of 1/2 allen with a 1/2 six point socket and a breaker bar. sometimes I have to toss in a bit of oxy/acetylene as well.
good luck and keep posting
