Outdrive grinding sound when turning left and right (after servicing)

I took the boat to a mechanic, and he replaced the gimbal bearing, u-joints, bellows, and seal kit on outdrive + cleaned the gears in the outdrive + new outdrive oil & new trim sender units.

The whole point of doing this service, is to get rid of the engine roar when turning left and right, but it still does it, almost worst that it did before. + Now it seems that i get more than usual water in my bilge area while driving the boat (yes plug is in).

What do you guys think might be causing the grumble/grinding noise when turning in the outdrive?

Not sure how to solve your problem, but if you paid good money to have it serviced i would ask them to get the job done right.

Only a couple of ways that water gets in a boat.

Forgot plug (hole in the hull)

Cooling system leak

bellows leak

Have your bellows double checked. They may have been installed incorrectly and/or not sealed correctly...

i understand that he needs to fix it, but i am just wondering what could it be?
If its not the gimbal or the u-joints, what else could cause the grinding when turning

IF the alignment is not done right the ujoints can deflect to the side when the outdrive is lowered because the shaft binds on the way in.

When they deflect to the side they can scour the bellhousing and transom fitting. Hopefully this is not it, because the outside of these is where you drive bellows seals fore and aft.

could very well be poor job on the install of the gimbal bearing/u-joints, or...

a poor job of reassembling the drive after the reseal - forgot a shim, didn't replace/torque the drive gear nut properly in the upper

what model outdrive is it, if its a older volvo it could be the bearing in the bellhousing

Quit worrying about what the problem is, there is no way of knowing without looking at things (like pulling the drive) take it back and look at what they find. I didn't ask what they said in a phone call, I said LOOK at what they find. Make them show you, take pictures and post back here what you see.

PS: An engine being out of alignment is not going to take out a gimbal bearing. Geeezzzzzzzzz.

If its a Mercruiser, and it sounds like it is, it could be like this:water is getting in thru some incorrectness in bellows or drive installation. If it only leaks while running Id look closely at o ring where water tube mates up when installing drive. There is almost certainly water entering boot, and from there boat, and in the process it is washing all trhe grease out of gimbal bearing causing the noise. If in fact noise was there immediatly on reinstalling things, noise has another cause. A bad engine coupling is a possibility.

huh??

i don't see how that could cause water to enter the bellows while running or otherwise - there is a quad ring that should be in place in the bell housing where the drive upper bearing retainer mates to the bell housing

a bad coupler should have been noticed immediatly after the drive was removed for service - the first thing to look at right before checking engine alignment - certainly noticed when aligning the new gimbal bearing upon installation

water entering the bilge with engine running = y-pipe/exhaust leaking or cooling line/system leaking

Re: Outdrive grinding sound when turning left and right (after servicing)

Quad rings can and do leak. The pressurized water from the water pump, if the o ring is dislodged, can cause water to enter the boot WHEN RUNNING, I know this because it happened to me.Of course I dont know if this is the case in this instance, nor does anyone else right now I guess.Re the coupler, if it is worn or has somehow gotten out of alignment(it is a rubber hub and they can/do go out of alignment), it will cause right left vibration even after all else is changed. I know this from experience also.Coupler doesnt have to be that bad either, and an alignment check, unless done with a lot more care than is normally the case, wouldnt pick up on it. Be interested to hear what the problem turns out to be.
