outdrive gimbal slipping?

I just had my mechanic replace my gimbal and boot on my volvo-penta DP-SM outdrive because I had some vibration when turning. The first time out, my new boot got a hole and drive noise became much louder (the drive did rub bottom on a sandy shoal while on plane but don't think it would have done any damage, but it did slow the boat so it put a lot of pressure on the drive assembly). Took it back to mechanic and the corrugated ring on the bearing came apart and shrapnel tore the boot up. What could have caused this and now I'm worried that the transom assembley has wear and the bearing won't seat tight because it was spinning. Any suggestions?

Re: outdrive gimbal slipping?

Your post really doesn't make much sense. The corrigated ring around the gimbal bearing can NOT come out of position in any kind of normal situation. Of course your situation may not be normal. If the bearing was so bad that it locked up and destroyed the bearing and outer ring, it's possible, but if that happened, you will most likely now need a gimbal housing (aka transom shield)
If the bearing was that bad, why wasn't it spotted when the new bellows was installed? That would be my question.

The bearing was replaced with the boot, that was the reason he was in there. I had a noticeable noise when turning so I asked the mechanic to change the bearing and we went ahead and changed the boot also. By inspecting to trashed bearing, it looks like the bearing started spinning in the housing and came apart, just guessing though. Is it possible to shim or put 5200 in there, or put in an oversized bearing so I don't have to buy the housing?
