The other day I performed a gear lube change on both engines. My procedure is to clamp the gear lube hose behind the reservoir and then drain the outdrive. In doing so, on the starboard engine the gear lube managed to drain out of the reservoir anyway.

I filled the drive from the bottom as usual and inserted the drain plug and top plug. Then I noticed the reservoir was completely empty so I just added fluid to it.

Is that OK? Or should I have inserted the top plug and forced fluid from the bottom of the drive all the way to the reservoir?

Just want to make sure that this will not cause problems during the year.

That's the way the book says to do it, with reservoir cap off until about 1/2 full then top off from the top.

Will need to let one of the other guys answer on if it could be an issue.
