I drained the fluid from my outdrive, I was wondering if I can leave it empty for the winter or is it best to refill ?

It seems to me that filling it would eliminate any potential problems.

Agree with Fishermark and will add, while leaving it empty may not cause any issues, keeping it full through the winter will allow you to see if it leaks at some point.

Re: outdrive fluid

refill it. if you leave it empty, condensation can form, which in turn forms rust on the upper bearings. Rust on the bearings leads to bearing failure. bearing failure leads to a bad day.

You can get Pennzoil outboard motor grease for $5.50 per quart at Walmart. If you use a pump to install it, you can usually get by with one quart.

The ONLY oil recommended by Mercury for stern drive units is Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube... DO NOT put grease in any drive, only oil....

Ayuh,.... Sounds like a Great way to Smoke the upper unit,...

The Alphas hold 'bout a Quart, 'n a Half,....

Upper bearin's are the 1st to see the Oil level drop,....

Ayuh,.... Yer No doubt absolutely Correct with that Chris,....

Though I don't use it,...

The Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube is a fully syn-oil with a nice colored dye added,...

I've been usin' Mobil 1 in 75W-90 since Syn-oil came out,...
It's also, like Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube, is a fully syn-oil, in 75W-90,...
The only difference I can find is Mobil 1 Don't have the pretty colored dye added to it,...
It's just a clearish amber oil colored, fully synthetic gear lube in 75W-90,...

I've done plenty of unintentional Testin' over the years,...
The Mobil 1 will keep things lubed, while supportin' Alota water intrusion,... aka: Everything is still Super Slippery,..
'n Seein' water intrusion is just as easy, for Me anyways, no matter whether the Oil is amber, green, or blue in color,...
Btw,... I run it only for Convienence, quick, 'n easy access, over any oil analysis,.....

I whole heartedly Agree, that grease don't belong in yer outdrive,...

I wouldn't even use the 80W-140,... just 75W-90, Syn-oils,...

Re: outdrive fluid

Interesting, same as I put in the car gearbox and transfer case... Might give it a try....

works on keeping my lubrication inventory manageable. I run Amsoil universal marine gear lube myself.

I try to use the same lubes (oil or grease) in as many places as I can for the same reason... ;)
