I have 2002 Johnson 50hp.
in the beginning the motor was running rough, not reving up and battery was not charging, I replaced the stator with a used one from ebay, replaced the fuel pump, inline filter, spark plugs and fuel hose.

now, it seems to idle fine, but won't stay idling long unless i keep choking it. and when i try to give it gas it bogs down and dies, but will start back up when i choke it. i removed both carbs, squirted cleaner in and around and put them back together. There was no dirt or varnish in the carbs so i didn't do a whole rebuild or cleaning.

so I'm left without ideas, it will start and continue to run when i keep choking it and it runs smoothly, but won't stay running or rev up without bogging down and dying.
helllllllppppppp.

The electric primer valve puts fuel directly into the motor.-----This fuel bypasses all the metering circuits in the carburetors.-----To me this indicates that the fuel system needs attention.-----And as always I ask posters to list the actual compression values here.----That information can be of huge help in trouble shooting.

ok i will hunt down a compression gauge and take readings.

If the compression checks out then might be float system issues. Do the carbs have plastic pieces?

ok i did the compression check, the top cylinder was 126 and the bottom was 130. So any ideas what is going on? it has dual carburators.

Question 2, plastic parts?

Did you remove all the seals before shooting the carb cleaner? It basically ruins rubber.

Is it dying before it gets warm? If so, keep giving it a squirt until it stays running. Warm up lever is up correct?

After it dies have you looked at the plugs? Are they wet or dry?

yes removed rubber, but I also didn't do a very thorough cleaning, more inspecting the bowl for dirt and corrosion. it dies whether the motor is cold or warm. yes warm up lever is up. I have not looked at the plugs after trying to run it. but when I did the compression test and took the plugs out, I had installed brand new plugs earlier, and noticed the top plug looked brand new with just a little black, but the bottom plug was all black if that makes a difference.

these carbs with the plastic idle circuit covers on top were designed to be able to clear out the delicate idle circuit very easily. you will see a hole underneath that connects to the idle pickup tube (tiny tube inside the large one for high speed). use a syringe with alcohol or can of carb cleaner make sure its clear or suprise... it will bog and/or idle like crap. another crucial thing is the spark advance and cam rollers... are BOTH intact with their clear outer sleeves still on? i doubt it. the spark advance one will cause timing to jump around and advance much too late, further exacerbating the issue.

Those pesky cam rollers.
I gave mine a spin the other day just to check it and it broke in half. I had a one on hand but it made me laugh that I was just another trip away from trouble.
