Hi , Im new here hopefully Im posting this in the right area....( and I am ready for OMC sea drive bashing) I just replaced powerhead in a 1985 OMC Seadrive 1.6 litre outboard , no problems with removing old one and installing replacement , it fired right up first time ,which was a nice surprise ( i dont really have any experience with outboards)...but when i turned the key off motor wasnt shutting down , I had to pinch fuel line to get it to shut down ....any ideas????

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

Are you sure the replacement switch is compatible with an outboard and is properly connected to the magneto wires?

I never replaced switch i replaced powerhead and thats it?I switched 2 wires on ignition just to see if it would make a difference?.( thinking wiring on powerhead may be slightly different ) I put them back to where they were
Im thinking it can?t be anything too serious or it wouldn?t start and run

Re: outboard wont shut off with key

You must have something hooked up incorrectly under the cowl, or one of the magneto wires has broken between the powerhead and the ignition switch.

Start the engine and then disconnect the big harness plug. Insert a short jumper wire between the ignition kill terminal on the engine side harness and ground. If the engine dies the problem is in the helm side if the harness. If not, the problem is with the engine harness wiring.

Check or ground the ignition switch. I just had the same problem
