My 35hp 1958 sea horse won't idle. The only way you can get it to crank is put throttle way high, too high. Once it cranks if jerk it and gear it runs good. I have had the carb off and cleaned it, could it have sucked something else in it. I have good spark on both plugs. New coils, condensers, and points. I think it is the carb but not sure. How fast should it idle when i first crank it?

Have you checked compression?
When you overhauled your carb did you remove the welch plug on the top of the carb and clean the low speed circut really good?
I would think that engine, in proper tune and good compression, would idle at 500-600 RPM.

If you had the carb off and rebuilt it, you have to rest the low speed jet, and on your I think it also has a high speed one too.
When you cleaned the carb, did you get a kit? Did you remove and clean out the passages behind the welch plugs. Did you remove the jets and clean those passages too?

What is the welch plug?

Round, nickel-sized plug on top of carb. To remove, drill a small hole in the plug, being careful not to let the drill hit the carb. Then pry it out with a small screwdriver. Clean the holes thoroughly - I use the thin wire from a twist-tie. Then shoot carb cleaner through the holes, and through the low speed needle orifice (back the needle out and blast it good.) Re-install a new plug which comes with the carb kit. Flatten the plug carefully with a ball-peen hammer to seal.

I take it then you didn't rebuild the carb, nor clean it throughly.
Well I'd suggest redoing the carb. They are really simple to rebuild, kits are avaliable, and not over priced. Kits do come to rebuild many HP carbs, so you will have a few extra parts. Just take care taking yours apart, so you know where everything fits, a little carb cleaner, and should be good as new.

Thanks for all the input, i think i got it. What i did was back the low speed needle on out to 2 full turns instead of 1 1/2 turns, hit the start and she fired right up i fine tuned it ever so slightly and it is idling very smoothe
