I'm looking to buy a used 6hp-9.9hp outboard motor. My preference would be a 7.5hp as it probably gives me the best to weight ratio, other than a Nissan 9.9hp which seems to be hard to find around here. There are a few 8hp motors in the local classifieds, do they weigh the same as a 7.5hp or are they the same as a 9.9hp? Any other insight would be appreciated.

Check out the Johnson 8 horse, it weighs under 60 lbs. and it's one of Bombardiers new quality products. I just bought one........ :)

Ditto on the Johnson!(My Personal preference, lots of easy to find parts and lots of dealers ) But, nissan does make an excellent motor, also. Can't go wrong with either as long as they check out mechanically OK.

A mercury 8hp in the mid 80's can be "upgraded" to a 9.9 with only a few inexpensive parts. Its a very powerful light weight little motor, if you can find one. I believe it weighs in at roughly 70lbs. <br /><br />Go with as much power as your budget allows. You seldom hear anyone complaining that "I wish I would have bough a smaller motor..."<br /><br />Nav
