Could someone help me out with which engines would be best for my boat please.

The boat is 32 foot, has a cabin and will be customised for game fishing charter. AS standard it is set up for twin outboards, but has an option for sterndrive. Which would be the best for me, and what would be the differences between the two.

The manufacturer has said that if I go with outboards then he advises two 200hp mariner efi, are these engines any good, or do you think a better known make such as yamaha would be better.

I think i'm going to go with the outboard option, but was wondering whether to go with two or four stroke, any one got any advise?

Re: outboard vs sterndrive

Im no expert but I would sure give an IO
serious consideration. Thats a lot of boat to push around. Again not an expert but it would seem to me the boat would handle better with the
weight concentrated inside the hull instead of hanging off the transom.
With IO your horsepower is almost unlimited.
If your not looking for brute horsepower I
bet a couple of V6s with outdrives would give
a good combo of power and well distributed light weight.

I personally would go with the outboards. With two, you have redundancy plus a he** of a lot more room in the boat.

c/6

Hooty

Ahoy, Sim.

Given your plan for use of the boat, I think I would go with I/O Diesels or 4 stroke outboards.

Fuel usage, reliability and longevity can make the difference between profit and loss in a commercial venture.

Good luck. :)

Volvo or Yanmar I/O diesels would be my first choice on a boat of that size...

If you can overcome their initial cost, the amount of money in fuel savings would make up the cost difference in the end...$$$$....

ITS A CABEN BOAT!!!
thats ac clue not to get inboard GAS engines. I would go with double diesel but outboards would give you alot more roooooooom!!! (and I mean alto you can really see the difference!!! (and feel) if you go with diesels get the new type of higher RPM turning ones (they have superchargers) these take up alot less room then the old clunky diesel type. Also with outboards you will have fish fighting room taken away, and hulling the "ketch" of the day aboard is a Pain in the %^&. Both inboard and outboard have equal goods and bads.

Hi sim,if your charter fishing islands in thailand i would personaly go with the outboards.Easy to remove and send away for repairs.Easy to repower.
I have twin 200hp mercury 2stroke (alloy boat same length 4 ton) on a parasail boat and seems a bit excessive for your use.Figure on 40gal/hr(160l)
I see many twin 115johnsons on 30ft fiberglass boats used here for diving.
Just a thought! When can we go fishing?

Sim,

I just noticed your from Thailand. As I lived over there at one time, finding parts was the hardest thing. I would consider that more than anything.

I would think finding parts for an I/O would be easier than an outboard, but I may be wrong.

There was a guy from Thailand on this board about 2 months ago asing a bunch of questions about his outboard.

Chok dee,
Ken

Re: outboard vs sterndrive

I think i'm gonna go with the outboard option, they're a lot cheaper to buy, and it means i'll be able to trailer it easy, and also get right in on the beaches. Nearly all boats out here have Yamaha outboards, so there shouldn't be too much trouble with parts.

I've noticed though that lots of people are switching to mariner engines, they're about $1300 dollors cheaper outhere, and if they're mercury in the box they should be pretty good, not sure about getting parts though.
