Well, my 72 johnny 125 is still giving me fits. It has a funny ignition problem. It will be running fine, then just cut off. I did that light bulb test with no results. I have checked every thing else on it, replacing rectifier reference short. I pulled on all wires to see if I could re create shut down when its running with no luck. I have a clymer manual, but have ordered a factory manual recently ( I didnt see readings for the coil in the clymer). I was wondering if anybody had the info on converting it to points. I'm not crazy about points, but something's gotta give. I'm not really crazy about spending the money on a new pulse pack, no luck on a 'preowned' one yet. It's getting warm and the water's calling.

Did you check the anti-reverse spring to see if is badly worn, or broken? It wraps around the crank shaft, under the timer base. It's purpose is to stop the engine from running backward if it should backfire upon start up.<br />If the engine is running, try this test! Hook an amp meter in series with pak's coil lead, and coil's primary wire. The coil should not draw over 1-1/2 amps. and the meter should hold steady

Rick.... You state: "I did that light bulb test with no results."<br /><br />I assume that means that the bulb DID NOT glow? If so, then it sounds like you have an intermitent powerpack, assuming that 12v is being applied to the pack.<br /><br />A pre-owned powerpack? Use caution as that is exactly what you have at the present time.<br /><br />What price have you found on a new powerpack?

Re: outboard troubles continued

Thanx for the replies. Ill check the coil tomorrow when I get a chance. Thats true about a used power pack. I thought I found a repaired one , but It's not for my year. I'm just scared if I buy another , it'll do the same thing in time. If any other info comes up that would help, please reply. 235$ cheapest on the pack I found.
