Outboard to work on minimum throttle

Hello, I would like to get a new outboard motor to work on minimum throttle.Until recently I used a yamaha malta 3hp and it worked realy great. Which of the new motors would push the boat at the same speed on minimum throttle? Should I look at mercury 2.5 or could I also take the 3.5, possibly the 4, which would suit me best since it has a reverse but I'm afraid it doesn't have too much minimum,idle gas?The boat weighs 550 kg if there is additional cargo and more.It is used on the river.Thanks...


Does the gear ratio affect the operation at minimum gas?

In that range up to 6hp
Gear ratio

Suzuki1.92:1

Tohatsu, mercury 2.15:1

Honda, Yamaha 2.08:1

Yes,in gear but without gas.

The yamaha malta I had was excellent, but I gave it to my brother. I want to get a new engine and I don't have much experience with the newer 4t.

They also have flip up trolling plates, that bolt to the engine. When down, they slow the boat for trolling. When up, the motor will achieve top speed.

Any of the newer small 4 strks will do what you want. Find a dealer close to.you with a good reputation. Another Yamaha 5 hp and under would be an excellent choice.

How do you know that any of the newer 4 stroke motors will do what he wants? He wants to go slow. How slow is slow? Not sure of the basis of your recommendation. I agree that small 4 cycle motors idle well, but is it slow enough for him? Who knows.....

Isn't idle speed dependent on prop pitch and RPM?

How do you know I am wrong? Somebody had to answer his question. Jeez telling him to get trolling plates and props when he doesn't even have a motor? He asked for a recommendation on a motor. Somebody had to answer it.

His question was too vague for your answer, however, you did give an answer, so that is something.

You told him to pick any small 4 cycle OB motor. It might even work. of course, if you prop it correctly, it has a better chance.

A trolling plate will reduce the trolling speed, as will a sea anchor, constantly shifting from fwd to n, etc. Those are more practical.

Just because you didn't understand the question nobody can? Oookaaaay. But I will spell it out for you. He wants a motor that runs at low speeds as well as his 2 strk Malta did. Don't know why you are confused about that. So yes any of the small 4 strks will do that. But yes you should by parts for a motor you don't even own?
