Hi all,

First time poster, long time inboard/outboard user. We recently bought a 16 foot aluminum, boat for local fishing. No motor, so we bought 2 used outboards, (biddding on eBay, won both!) one is a Mercury 2.5, the other is a Honda B75. Got both motors running, but this sound so stupid, we can't figure out how to "unlock" the steering on either motor! Both are locked straignt ahead. I'm sure there is a release lever somewhere, can anyone "steer" me in the right direction?

thanks!

Re: outboard steering lock?

Are you trying to move the motors after they are mounted on the boat's transom, or are they just sitting there unmounted? An outboard is pretty darn stiff, and you may not be able to easily move the transom bracket around by hand unless you have some leverage, like you have when it is mounted on the boat and using the long tiller arm.

Re: outboard steering lock?

there on the boat, niether will turn at all. they seemed to be locked in the forward position. I figured you can lock these in the straight ahead position to ease mounting and removal, but all be damned if I can fgure out whats holding both of these in place.

thanks!

I have never heard of or seen an outboard with a steering lock, I believe you have another problem.

look for some zerk grease fittings on the motor and try that.

Are these both tiller motors?

they have a tension coupling, to hold the straight for trolling. loose the bolt.

Re: outboard steering lock?

We figured it out, both were very stuck, just needed to work them lose, all is well now. Now we just have to get them both ready for use.

thanks,
Joe
