I bought a brand new Johnson 150 to replace a 1989 Johnson 140hp last year. I have noticed the last time I went out, that when the steering wheel turns one revolution either way it snags, and the with a jiggle it steers again. It almost feels as if there was a gear missing in a gear box. When I push the motor while trailered it turns freely, however it still catches or snags when trailered from the steering wheel. My question** are there gears within the steering assembly, and is there a special tool that removes the steering wheel so it can be replaced....??????? Assembly is SH 5023 and it is a single helm. Thanks

what you have is a teleflex brand SAFE-T helm which runs about $110.if you go to iboats online store-or mine at gulfcoastmarinecenter.com you can get the teleflex Quick Connect system(new helm, bezel, hardware, cable)for around $150.

Matt_Fl34 <br />Since you are not going to use the original steering assembly, just put the nut back on 5 or 6 turns and as you are pulling on the steering wheel toward you, give the shaft a good whack or two with a hammer and it should pop right off. It is basically just pressed on the shaft. I'm sure you could get a small steering wheel puller from an auto parts store if this make you nervous.

Hey Rick got the steering wheel off, and I guess I am just not mech enclined... there is a black plastic piece around the bottom of the post ...kind of like a spacer... it does not have a notch in it to slide the post out.. I think I need it for looks... does that notch come out of the metal post? thanks for the help if you can...

Yes, if your are talking about the small "Key" that sits in the slot on the shaft, just take a punch or screwdriver and knock it out. That is what keeps your steering wheel from turning on the shaft, Be sure to use a new one when you get the new assembly. Should come with it. And yes, you will need to re-install the black spacer with the new unit.

slamm, time to replace the cable. get the number off the black sheath. thats you replacement number. get that rod out of the engine before it freezes up in there. then clean the inside of the tube really well. if you have more question start your own thread, this one is 4 years old.
