My dear boaters...
I have a 1973 Mercury 50 HP outboard. Today I took it out fishing but my trip got cut short. Shortly after takeoff I started to experience problems with my outboard. When the engine is in idle and at slow speeds 3000-4000 rpm (7-9mp/h) it runs ok but if I try to go any faster soon after I give it full throttle and it reaches about 6000 r/pm it slows down to like 8 m/ph and if I keep the throttle down for 20 seconds the engine turns off. Sometimes I noticed that it try's to go faster but it cant, I could hear it get louder but nothing would happen.
Last year I had the fuel lines, fuel filter replaced. Also according to the mechanic that did the work on it he said that both carburetors have been re-build. Two weeks ago it ran just fine without any issues. The only difference between two weeks ago and today was fuel. I always put 89 in it with stabil fuel stabilizer and some sea foam. Same gas station and everything.
The Spark plugs have been changed in the off-season. A person that I know that lives close by the lake said it might be "stator coils" I am not sure what that is or what it looks like at the moment.
Any advice on how I should approach this problem?
Thanks
Zipp
