I have a 1950 Crestliner 14 ft Aluminum boat. My 1955 18HP breathed its last not long ago so I'm looking for a replacement. Would a 25HP 4 stroke be too much engine for this boat?

thanks.

You should be fine with that...maybe someone will chime in with the USCG site that has the formula to figure it out...just a thought :)

Re: Outboard Selection

that'd be helpful. Its a 54 year old boat, I don't want it falling to bits on me out there.

Re: Outboard Selection

uscg method is as follows:
lentgh X 2 plus width -90 = max hp.

will not work on very small boats such as small johns.....
example
17 feet boat with 6 foot width
17X2=34x6=204-90=114hp

id say thats too big a motor. maybe a 2 stroke 20hp , but not a 25hp 4 stroke

1994lundminnow,

you have to be careful, a 25hp 4 stroke engine is heavier than a 25hp 2 stroke, so if you are going to put on the maximum hp that the boat requires, if you are going 4 stroke, you should downize the engine from 5-10 horspower for maximum performance..........hope this helps

I have a 90's year 16' Crestliner with a 2002 4-stroke 15 on it. It goes very well. I would guess a 15 hp 4-stroke is all you need on that 14'er. :)

I agree with Forktail...15hp would (should) be plenty. Your old 18 most likely never got a true 18 anyway, even when new.
I bought an 8hp yammy last fall for a kicker on my 18ft'r and mounted it on a 12 ft alum. deep-v to move some fish feeders on a small lake and when we were done, I opened it up just to see what it would perform like and man, that 8 will make that boat fly with 2 guys in it, I was impressed.

Re: Outboard Selection

phatmanmikes formula:

14ft*2 = 28

28 * width of 5ft = 140 - 90 = 50HP... I know that is WAY too much motor.

Thanks for everyones help. I kinda figured that 25HP would be a bit much. The 18HP seemed to be enough before.

Thanks.
