outboard reversing question.

I have a 98' 40hp merc. My ques. is that in reverse 1\4 throtle the motor lifts out of the water. am i missing parts that prevent this?<br />this motor has power trim\tilt,could there be a problem with my hyd. piston?<br />the serial # is OG719545<br />any help would be great, thanks in advance,Ron

I cant say for your motor but most outboards use a latch that activates as you shift to reverse.<br />If you look on the lower unit where it rests<br />against the mounting bracket youll see a rod and a hook or latch that latches to hold the motor down.It may simply be bent or jammed.<br /> Cant tell you much more.<br /> If you plan to do any repairs a manual is a must.Very helpful.
