currently in the process of converting my i\o to outboard power.the wiring is old and needs replacing.will the outboard come with its own harness, is it a separate purchase, or do I need to run one?also,if it does have its own harness, will it have a hot or acc. lead to power the fuse panel up front?
thanks for helping.

Re: outboard questions

The O/B will come with everything that it needs to run itself. You will also need to run Pos. and Neg. leads up to the dash to power items such as: lights, 12V power supply, bilge pump, etc.

I would suggest 8 guage for these leads.

Re: outboard questions

I read your post and was thinking of what I would need to go through to do a conversion on my inboard -- could be kind of complex. You will want to take out the starting circuit for the I/O since you won't need that. You will also need another ground since you are removing the main ground (the engine block), but the ground wiring should be OK for reuse, I think. You might consider setting up an auxiliary battery and wire everything but the new motor to that battery. That keeps everything separate, and insures the motor starting and charging system will not be affected. You can install an isolater at some point if you want to charge both batteries from the engine, but still keep the starting battery separate. Alternatively, you can simply switch batteries occasionally to make sure both stay charged.

sounds like an interesting project.
