hello. i just bought a 84' 70hp evinrude. even though I'm not even close to installing this outboard, i was looking things over and noticed the mounting holes are set at a different width than my 71' 50hp. now reading other threads on iboats it is said that the mounting pattern was standardized and modeled after a 1960's v4 evinrude. Am I missing something or am i just gonna have to drill new holes in my recently rebuilt transom?

Re: outboard mounting

Ah, the 50s still used the thumbscrew transom clamps. There may have been a provision to also bolt it to the transom as well, but primarily it was the thumbscrews. The transom bolts may very well be positioned differently. The old fat 50 V4s used thumbscrew clamps as well. Once you went above that rating they relied on through-the-hull bolts. Measure carefully. You know what they say, "measure twice, cut (or drill) once"

Take the boat down to a BRP dealer, have him put his jig on it for drilling holes in the transom, have him drill them and you will be right on. Plug any other holes you have left.

I always use 3m 5200 polyurethane sealant. That stuff is fantastic, until you get some on you. then its a pain in the butt.
