When I asked my initial question, I should have mentioned that the reason the motor will be used at full throttle most of the time is because a 14 year old boy will be driving it, so a bigger engine would not be my answer. I need a way to either govern the throttle or find a very durable engine.

Re: Outboard motors 35-50 hp

Hi Rockland,
I have a 15 yr old that runs a 1972 65 HP
Merc. I like the 4cyl 50,45,40 HP Mercs. The 3 cyl 40 and 50 HP Mercs are newer and just as dependable. They have more tourqe than the
4 cyl engines. Also the 49.9 cu in 50HP Merc,
is a propshaft rated version of the 65HP of
my Sons, much newer and improved. The new 50 Mercs are a 53 cu in engine. OMC 3 cyl 50 HP engines are good ones too. Just remember the water pump is the weakest point in engines today, so a water pressure gauge would be a good investment.
...good luck...corm
