I am about to take my boat home for christmas and had some questions about the drive. Right now the outboard is off the boat.. are there any advantages to putting it on the boat? Will it make the boat more stable? also when you put the outboard in the bed a truck does it matter what side it is on? I have always just put it on the side opposite the tiller arm but recently friends have been having problems with there motors when they lay them on their side. Also the motor is a 1968 Evinrude 6 hp Evinrude.

Thanks for the help

Kevin

Re: Outboard Motor

A motor that small shouldn't affect boat/trailer balance much so I wouldn't worry about putting it back on the boat. Position in the truck isn't a problem either with 2 strokes. 4 strokes have problems when laid down wrong because of the oil in the crankcase flowing where it shouldn't.

Re: Outboard Motor

It's really too light to affect the stability of the boat. The tiller is a lot more durable than the shift lever so lay it on that side. Mine's traveled many miles in the trunk of a car like that.

I have one of those '68 6hp rudes - used it regularly for at least 25 years. Would you believe it's never been in the shop? Never failed to start and I never needed a tow. gotta love it.

jtw

Love to fish Texoma. Also Fork, Richland Chambers near Corsicana and, when I only have a few hours, Joe Pool. I been hearing a lot lately about the crappie bite on Ray Roberts. There's so many lakes around here it boggles the mind.

Grew up in Shreveport fishing on Bistineau, Caddo, Wallace, places where you could rent a flat-bottom jonboat for $3 and 6hp will put you on fish. But I guess you know about that. :)

jtw
jtw

Re: Outboard Motor

Hey Jtexas i live in arlington too. am getting a 12 ft. alum boat ready for next spring. just bought a 10hp johnson for 45 bucks at a garage sale. going to tear lake arlington up. they say there are a few fish there. a friend caught an 8lb. bass there in october. if this motor works out ok, i may venture out to pool and or texoma. was bummed out to find that a motor has to be titled. didn't find out until i bought the motor and the lady didn't have a title. also, the 35.00 bucks to register the boat and the 45.00 for license plates for the trailer. bought the trailer for 50.00 and replaced one wheel bearing set and bought new tires for it. i think i will put the motor in the trunk also, because the motor on the transom makes it flex when starting it in the trash can. haven't had it on the water yet, gotta wait til after christmas to save up some money for the registrations!!

Re: Outboard Motor

I hear ya, sbump. about 3 months ago my Dad, at age 82, figured he's not getting enough use out of the bass boat he bought 3 years ago (his first boat) so he gave it to me (my first boat). 15 ft 1980 vintage Kingfisher / 70hp evinrude runs like new. You'd think now that I've hit the big time I would turn my back on you tiller-steering-rope-pull-starting-no-livewell-paddle-for-a-trolling-motor jonboaters, but heck no, I'm just the same ol' looosiana boy as I ever was. I just today got the registrations back on the boat/motor - the trailer still has LA plates though. but that won't stop me. The 6hp never has been titled - guess I'll have to worry about that sometime. nah!

married a native texan 25 yrs ago so that makes me texan, right? well, she was actually born at Fort Sill Oklahoma, but if your Army Dad is stationed on foreign soil you still get his native citizenship, right?

Hey, I just noticed, a johnson 10 for $45? man you is one kind of champion shopper! I predict you will not be feeling underpowered with that one. One thing I noticed with the 6 was that a 14ft boat planed easier than a 12-footer. If I was alone, I always put the gas tank in the front of the boat for better weight distribution.

jtw

Re: Outboard Motor

Hi jtexas

My Daughter lives about 3 miles from Richland Chambers just outside Corsicana and every time I get the chance to go there, I head to the lake. Neat place!! I keep my little runabout down at their house just for that purpose. Pontoon stays here at home! Matter of fact, I'm heading there on Christmas night for a week. Hope the weather is good!! If you're down there and see this boat, you've found me. :)
