while i've used outboards on a many different boats i've never gotten in to repairs, maintance and upgrades. now i'm looking to customize a boat for a trip i've had a desire to make. i've found a boat and a johnson 88 spl to power it, now my question: Does the Johnson 88 Spl have a charging circuit on it? on previously owned outboards i've always ran one starting battery and a deep cycling battery for all accessories. is there a web site that would contain a list of expected outputs from charging systems for various outboards?

My end goal is to make a trip on the McClellan-Kerr inland waterway from the Tulsa port of Catoosa to the Mississippi. This is about a 500 mile trip and i figure will take about a week round trip. My concern is to make the trip without the loss of a battery, and if the 88 spl has a charging circuit that will support charging the batteries for that kind of trip.

thanks for any help that can be given.

Yes a 88SPL should have a charging circuit (as long as it is functioning), although I don't know the exact output they are generally less than 10 to 15A output....

Re: outboard motor alternator???

The 88hp Johnson SPL was produced between 1987 and 1996. It was a "no frills" version of OMC's V4, which was originally premix and didn't have T&T. The non-T&T models all have 6amp stators, while the models with T&T (starting in '88) have "3/9" amp stators. I'm not sure what the "3/9" amp designation stands for, but I assume it means a maximum of 9 amps output.
