I have a 1970 100HP Johnson outboard. I changed the oil in the lower end and it had water in it. Does anyone out there know what this could be caused by? How hard is it to work on the lower end? Any info would help. Thanks

Sounds like you have a bad seal somewhere, time for a seal kit. Should not be too difficult to install, replace impeller while you are at it.

My guess is the seal behind the prop went bad. Did you hit anything? Is you prop shaft bent? When is the last time it was replaced? Also, check oil drain and over fill screw seals. Are they there? Do they need replaced. Last idea I have is check lower unit closely for any hairline cracks. I'm not an expert, but hopefully this helps. ;)

That old baby is the hydro/electric shift gearcase... That thing is worse than automatic transmission in a car.. If you had water in it, make sure you get lube back in it quick. I don't know if you are talking fresh or salt. The thing is parts are about non existant for that gearcase, so take care of what you have.

The G and MW are right. You have a bad seal. Those old gearcases can be mother's to get apart and what's the sense of tearing it apart unless you have...new parts to put it back together with?

I hate to be bring-er of doom and gloom, but make sure before you tear into the gearcase it's not just a drain plug seal. Have it pressure/vaccum cheched at an OMC dealer before the wrenches come out.

Here's the worst part of it...If the gearcase go's you trash the engine. The engine block does not have the alum bosses to mount the system for a manual shift gearcase.

All I'm saying is take care of what you have...Those old 69-70-71 100hp's were stump pullin screemers...

Hello, Grandx
I have a 1991 40horse johnson. From the shop manual it said I need a special tool call the puller to get the propeller shaft bearing housing out and that is where the seals located. When I got that out, how hard is it to take the seals out from that. Do I have to replace the O-ring after I took out the prop bearing housing ? Please help.

Thanks,

Mattt.
