I am new to this forum, but I'm a long time lurker. Great forum.
I have a 14 foot marathon welded aluminium outboard jet boat with a tunnel. It has a radius style hull. One piece bottom with a vee front progressing to 8 degree deadrise at the rear. Anyway I currently have a 2004 Yamaha f50 jet. It weighs around 270 lbs dry and puts out 35 hp at the jet. I am thinking of upgrading to a 2009 Mercury 2 stroke 90/65. It weighs 315 lbs. I did the coast guard calculation and the boat can handle 65 hp. I also had a kicker on the back which weighs 50 lbs. There is no sticker stating max hp on the boat.
Because of the tunnel. the boat displaces a bit more water than I would like at rest.My thought is that i am going to put the 90/65 on and try it. If it displaces too much at rest, I will put flotation pods on. I have seen jet boats like mine with larger outboards on them. So what do you think? I'm thinking I should give it a try.
