Ive got a 90 bass tracker pontoon boat and the gas cap is falling apart. Im really wanting to get one of those 13 inch guage caps with a mechanical fuel guage in it, but im not sure if they are vented or not. Also ive never known exactly how to use the vent cap on mine when does it need to be open and when does it need to be shut.

Re: outboard gas cap question

You might tell us what kind of gas tank you have. I assume it is a portable 6 gal one. If so, they need to have vented caps. Ditto on 12 gal portable tanks.

Close the vent between uses of the motor. Open the vent when the motor is being used.

sorry i left that out, it has i believe a 25 gallon tank that isnt portable its a plastic tank but it has bolt holes at the base of it and its bolted on the rear of one of the pontoons.

Re: outboard gas cap question

You need to look to see if there is a vent on that tank. Where it is that big and bolted to the toon it may have a vent on it already. BUT if not it is just like Chris said. Open when running and closed when not in use. As far as the gas cap you are wanting just look at the info on the gas cap and it should say if it is vented and should be able to be closed. Hope that helps..
