Outboard fuel primer bulb question

My '77 Merc 85 starts and runs for a short time, then dies. I can only restart the motor again by priming the bulb again until it is firm. Should the primer bulb remain firm while the motor is running or is there another answer to my problem?.

Possible thingd to look into. fuel tank venting, fuel filter cloged, or week fuel pump. You may also have fuel loned dtr rotted inside with ethanol in the fuel. I would pull and inspect the fule lines. and fuel pump first.

what i am thinking is that needle is sicking to its seat and not allowing fuel to run freelly.passibly because of contaminated fuel.try running motor with fresh fuel.u could spray sea foam "deep creep"into carbs and let it do its work.hts

If you want to eliminate the fuel pump, when you start it again, see if you can keep it running by squeezing the bulb, ie; you are the fuel pump.

Thanks, fishermen, for your help. Before receiving your answers, I remembered that I had only partially opened the fuel tank vent.
Opening it all the way solved the problem.
