I have a friend who is looking to buy a new pontoon, to fit his old engine. He has a 90's model 150 hp engine. He asked what kind of boat would handle that best. He hasnt found many that were rated for more than a 125hp engine. Could he still use a 150, or would it be too much? Also wondering what kind of pontoon you would recommend. thanks

Re: outboard engine size rating

In my opinion unless you buy a monster pontoon
your 150 is a waste of gas.
A 20 ft toon with a 50 is good for about 23 mph.
With a 150 you get about 9 mph faster at a tremendous cost in gas.
Toons are a great family boat with lots of room
(like your living room),very smooth ride.
Unlimited layout potential.Great fishing platform. But pretty short on speed.

If he can afford it, get a 24-25' Tri-Toon(3Log). That will make it worth while to use the 150HP. Should run 30-40 MPH with that set-up. A 20' toon will never handle a 150!

Rick
