outboard engine size rating

I have a friend who is looking to buy a new pontoon, to fit his old engine. He has a 90's model 150 hp engine. He asked what kind of boat would handle that best. He hasnt found many that were rated for more than a 125hp engine. Could he still use a 150, or would it be too much? thanks
