Wanting to buy a 84 McKee Craft 17ft. Question is I know it had a 140HP motor on it but its been taken off and I have no idea what brand. The controls are still there though. I have a good running 70HP Nissan available (side mount controls) and have considered buying a new Yamaha 90HP not a solid figure as they have not seen the boat but quoted $7000 installed with new controls.

Here is the real question I have been told that you have to match the controls to the engine. As if I bought a new set of Top Mount controls for the Nissan I could not later adapt them to use on a newer motor and would have to buy new controls again. Also that the current controls would not work on anything but a 140 of the same make as what was on it. Can someone spread some light on the subject for me. I have searched iboat and found controls saying will work with any outboard (possibly requiring some adapters) I searched for the control cables for nissan and Yamaha and come to the same cables. Im guessing the wiring for the trim is not to different. I would like to buy the new motor and controls but $7000 really isn't in the budget. Going with the used nissan and buying new controls seems like a wast if I have to new controls again if something goes wrong with the motor. If you can give me some suggestions please do.

Re: Outboard Engine Controls Question Yamaha and Nissan

Those controls will go with Yamaha, (and maybe suzuki as well - but don't hold me for that)
I happen to have a pair of those controls too, and only have OMC motors. They will fit more than just a 140 of that make though. Controls are brand sensitive, and not much else. They should fit a good portion of the Yamaha motors from a) that year, and b) many years, probably before and after. Here is a link to the question I asked earlier in the week about the same controls.

Now, if only someone would tell us exactly what years that the controls would fit. As for getting them to fit a different make motor, another set of controls shouldn't run too much more than 200, and even though that is a good chunk of change, in retrospect, it isn't much given the price of outboards.

Binnacle control boxes for all Japanese engine are interchangable. However, wiring harness's, instruments, etc., are not,
