Outboard Corrosion

A couple of months ago I bought a runabout with a 1986 Suzuki DT140 outboard. It has been running well, but I plan to do some maintenance in the next few months.

One item on the list is tidying up the lower casing. It has minor corrosion starting in some areas and the paint could do with a tidy (It looks original with paint removed by sand).

Can anyone tell me how to prepare and paint?

Re: Outboard Corrosion

I would remove any corrosion and loose paint with a stainless wire brush. Then sand smooth, degrease, and prime bare metal with a zinc chromate primer. Topcoat with factory touch-up, and it should look great. I add a clear anti-foul if the motor will be left in saltwater. Your mileage may vary. ;)

Re: Outboard Corrosion

fouled plug,

i have been thinking of repainting my 1970 evinrude and came aross this post on the topic. question for me is, would the zinc chromate primer not react with the aluminium housing thereby causing corrosion/flaking of the paint?

what did omc prime the unit with?

how many overcoats are given?

thanks to all.
