I have a 71 Mercury 650 and the controls that are junk. Is there a way of interchanging them with other types of controls?

Re: outboard controls

I believe that as long as you stick with Merc or Quicksilver controls, the gear and throttle cables (and directions) are compatible. You will need to make up your own wiring adapter to convert between the old style on your motor and the newer style on the controller. Wire color assignments will have changed as well.

Re: outboard controls

Theres no wiring on my controls at all. lol My Chrysler has everything on the dash area. The motor doesn't have power tilt so the PO just bypassed everything on the control. The only thing I was worried about was the cables matching up. Thanks for the info.

yeah, the good ol 600a cables are still used today.so you have the ign switch mounted in the console...that does simplify things .
