Does anybody know if you have to pay DMV registration taxes if you purchase a boat out of state. For example , I plan on purchasing a boat in New Jersey but i live in NewYork , i will obviously have to go to my local dmv to re-register the title to my name in NY state and also change the registration stickers on the boat. Any idea ? Thank You

Plan on paying the NY tax when you get to the DMV, as I assume you are registering the boat in NY. You may even have to pay it it ahead of going to the DMV. There is a bunch of reference material on line that you can review.

You are basically surrendering the NJ title as proof of ownership and getting issued a NY title and registration. NJ is not part of the equation from a tax perspective.

Depends on the state...

TX will have you pay the equal to sales tax, plus the registration fee. This is even if you paid sales tax buying it in the other state from a dealer the same day.

Woe unto the person who bought a new car, boat or trailer in another state and moves to Texas. They're paying the sales tax again... even if they've owned them for a few years. And its based on either the blue book HIGH or your purchase receipt.

Here in TN, you pay registration no matter what. Taxes here are not registration taxes, they are sales tax. If you purchased the boat out of state, and paid sales tax in that state (and can verify so), you'll not pay sales tax here. If you haven't paid sales tax, or can't verify you've already paid sales tax, you'll pay sales tax on the price of the boat. And I think in TN, if you can't verify the actual sale price of the boat (even if it's $0), you pay sales tax on a value scale they use (NADA or something like that).

Each state is gonna' do it differently.

It has been my experience that when i buy a vehicle/boat/trailer in one state, then move to or register in another state, I have paid sales tax again on the value declared when purchased based on the state and what i had previously paid. For example, when i bought my truck in Texas and moved to Florida, I paid sales tax in Texas at 8%, when i moved to Florida, the rate was 8.5% so they charged me the ,5% difference. When I brought the same truck to washington, They charged me sales tax based on the current Blue Book Value. Long story short, I have paid sales tax on a vehicle 3 times and I only purchased it once. Like others said before, It all depends on the State and the Tax Collectors interpration of the statue.
