Out drive troubles-water in lower assembly unit?

Hi fellow boaters:

I am fairly new to boating and need some help on a project boat I am redoing. 21 foot Starcraft. I purchased it a couple summers ago and rebuilt the engine myself last summer. Got the thing running better then new. When I took it out I noticed a couple of things, a loud rumble when I would turn the boat. Sounds like the upper unit assembly. When I drained the lube from the lower assembly for the winter, water came out as well. Where could the water have come from and what would the rumble be? Buy the way it's a 1970 with a 120hp motor 4 cyl.

RGR

Rumble is the u-joints. Your going to have to pull the drive to replace (Very common). Now the water in the lower unit can be several things. Buy a kit and install all new seals. If you dont want to install all the seals. Then you need to pressure check the lower and use soap bubbles to look for leaks. I say with a lower that old replace all the seals. About 40.00 from your local NAPA store.

Need help finding out what you need. Trentcr@hotmail.com

Thanks Trent:
I'll be honest here. I am not sure what to ask for on the lower unit seals. I can handle a motor, but the low end is something I have not tackled yet. I had trouble finding a water hose for the motor finally had to go to the marina to get it. So on a mercruiser low end, what do I need to ask for? Is it a common seal kit?

RGR

For the lower unit take this part number to your local NAPA autoparts store and you will have it the next day. It covers all lower units from 1964 up to the Alpha I drives. (18-2652) Seal Kit

Here is a breakdown for you also. Parts Breakdown

Checking the drive for water look here. Milky Water To get to the u-joints and check the bellows here is how to do that. Drive removal
