Remember the days when these antique drive-ins were a gathering place every weekend. Use to charge per car admission. Be surprised how many skinny lads could be stuffed in a car(including trunk}.

I'm sure many of you can remember sitting in your car with your arm tucked around your gal or any where else you could tuck. Or sitting on the hood of your car with a smoke hanging on your lip thinkn how cool you were.

Any one have any experiences they would like to share. Remember that JB may be lurking and that the G rating applies here if you know what I mean.

CrabBaits theater thread made me think of those days gone past. Have to drive fifty miles now to see one.......

we have a drivein 5 miles from my house and my wife and I make it a point to at least once a summer go and see a show it is fun. In fact it was at a drivein that we decided to have kids. Took the eldest this past summer and it was nice to see him sitting there in a lawn chair watching a movie

In the city I live the last drive in was closed when I was too young to enjoy it. I vaguely remember watching a Disney show, can't remember which one. Too bad. I think they should bring 'em back... most mall parking lots could host a movie screen at one end, a couple coffee or bun wagons, porta-potties and I'm sure technology could lend us some cordless speakers for the show. I love classic cars and this would be an excellent venue to get a bunch together in the same place. My all-time favorite flicks include American Graffiti and Two Lane Blacktop.
And what about leaving in a hurry and forgetting to take the speaker out of the window. Anybody besides me ever done this? They never seemed too surprised at the ticket office when you stopped to turn it in. Guess they'd seen about everything at the "Passion Pit".

Drive-ins, Ahhhhh. A sixpack and a bag of snacks. Windows would fog up. Windshield wipers don't wipe the inside very well. The back row reserved for pickups, facing the wrong way with lounge chairs and sofas, and bar-b-que grills.

There's lots of them still out there, just have to travel a ways to get to them. I think we should make a point to visit one at least once a year, so they stay in business for the youth to experience. They opened a new one about an hour away form me in '99. There are some websites that offer up "drive-in memorial" pages in tribute to the fall venues.

Re: Out door theaters....

I remember the RiverSide Drive-In. Called that cause if ya didn't turn the right way when leaving ya'd end up in the muddy Ohio treading water. On the backside of the screen was a big panorama of the Ohio with a sternwheeler pushing water. My Dad had a 56' Ford 1/2 Ton pickup in those days so we had to park at almost the back. But that was OK. Sat up high and always had a good view of the picture. Seems like Friday or Saturday night was Drive In night in the Summer when we wasn't camping at the lake. Folks were polite and talkative before the show started and we met lots of good people there. Even at intermission the adults would get out and strech, share coffee and rehash the last movie. The kids would head for the playground area. Why don't we see more of this these days? Seems like we, as a society always manage to screw up a good thing. Just thinkin out loud I guess.

One of my first "real" jobs was working the concession stand at a local Drive-In...about 1963. We had 5 in town at that time & they were easily the most popular place to take a date...easy to find a "parking" spot :D There is still one in the area...happens to be near the lake and we usually go 3 or 4 times a summer on a Fri. or Sat. night when we are at the lake for the weekend. The Drive-In is a far better way to watch a movie than going to a theater...no more speakers here...thankfully. Now you just tune in the radio which is a big improvement. They are a dying breed though for sure.

Back in the 70's use to go to several jambries, camp out, with several AF duddies, weekend deal, down around Ozona Tx, Bracketville area, 130 miles, west of San Antiono. Freedom, drink, visit, good folk music/contempary western/beatles during most breaks, pass out in your own tent. I need to find more of it,
these days:). No small exit door to find> I herd on the news, that ounce the fire started (Great White} you only had 30 second to make it outside. Yachow. Horrible.

Re: Out door theaters....

I sure did enjoy them. That is until DDT was no longer used. We had one near the river. I remember my last trip with my girlfriend. We had a car without air-conditioning. We had the windows rolled down. About 5 minutes into the film, the mosquitoes had drained 5 pints of blood and I was getting dizzy. With the windows rolled up, it was about 90 in the car, with them rolled down, the mosquitoes outnumbered us 100 to 1. Never went again. When I was a kid, we would go once a year with my parents, of course, there were a lot less mosquitoes. Anyone remember running through the DDT fog behind those jeeps?

Scoop, good memory on the bug foggers. I had a part-time job driving one when I was a teenager and the little kids would run down the street following it in the DDT fog. God only knows what it was doing to them and to me. Ah, good times!

Re: Out door theaters....

boy, the good ole days. i remember the drive-ins well. in dalton ga & chattanooga tn. the one in chatt was near the bottom of missionary ridge, in a congested part of the city, and we could sneak in thru a spot in the fence where some boards were missing. then we'd always find someone to hang out with, as if we were in their car.
and dalton was neat, kinda out in the outskirts with few distractions. i almost forgot the times at the one off hwy58 in chatt too. that's where we'd hide people in the trunk to get in.

it was better than skating rinks back then. lol

kids now would love it if it were safe like back then. you could have your own personal viewing area, refreshments of your choosing, the speaker on the window that you could adjst volume on, and a cushy back seat with no arm rests to get in the way for admiring the opposite sex.... you just had to be careful when running to the bathroom at the concession stand- the little rows of hills with speaker stands were rough the faster you ran, especially when imbibing ;)
