Well, had a great day planned today w my 17 Bayliner Capri mated to an 88 100 hp. I went outside and reinstalled my thermostat which I had been running w out for a while. Previously had a telltale problem which a new impeller fixed. Ran it on muffs w no telltale for about 4 mins. Stopped her and removed stat. Started again w not much of a telltale and an overheat alarm, shut down swiftly. Let cool for an hour to an hour and a half. Went to restart and would turn over but would not even sputter. Figured it was a fuel issue cause I would pump the bulb and it would essentially drain right out. Crack in bulb, so I went to WallyWorld and bought an Attwood pos Merc fuel line. Should have bought the universal and saved 5 bucks cause the ends were not tight fitting. Replaced w my ends and thought I would be good to go. But nothing. Same thing, turns over, wont even sputter. Then, I see black gasy, oily goo coming out of the prop. So, how bad is it doc?

First, pull the spark pl;ugs and look at them, carboned? How old are they?

While they are out do a spark test to be sure the ignition is working fine.

Chances are the plugs are simply fuel fouled and need to be cleaned/replaced.

The heating issue needs to be addressed, how old is the waterpump and impeller? More than 2 years?

A great number of motors are victems of neglect, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' attitude, which when the motor does finally fail to perform, can have a number of things that SHOULD have attention (maintenance) before being returned to service.

Let's just hope that it your case it is a simple change of spark plugs and a new impeller.

Motor acquired last August, passed compression test. All +/- 5 of 135 psi. Then carbs rebuilt by former Mercury tech, fuel pump rebuilt, new plugs, new water pump. New exhaust gaskets when I had a tell tale problem 3 weeks ago, oh and another new impeller when somehow my previously new impeller looked a touch melted around the center hole. Replaced and got my tell tale back. Ran well last weekend with great tell tale stream on the water, always seem to have some trouble peeing on the hose. But what about the oily gasy discharge out the prop hub? What would cause that all of the sudden? Could 45 seconds of the overheat alarm do that? Thanks for the reply.

Will check spark tomorrow and a friend reminded me to check my "kill switch". Hadn't thought of that after I ran over and snatched the key off during alarm. Don't own a compression tester but will buy one, wanted one anyway. Thanks guys.

Thick black oil from prop.... Have you changed brand of oil recently?

Thick black oil and no start. Guessing you have no spark for one reason or another, and all the cranking you have done you have LOADED the engine with unburnt fuel. Unburnt fuel has probably begun to wash all the carbon out of the exhaust housing in the midsection, and is now making it's way out of the exhaust via prop hub. Just guessing.

Exactly sxmerc! Accidentally flipped my kill switch and pumped the engine full of oil and gas trying to start it. Flipped the switch and gingerly started w no choke and now shes running well. Being a 2+2 I will take her down to the intercoastal this weekend to get the rpms up and kick in the bottom two carbs. Hopefully I will get her all cleaned out!! Thanks for the input everybody!
