Getting stuff together to do my carb rebuild on the 175.
I noticed the manual states a special tool is needed to remove the orifice plugs.
Is there a substitute tool that can be made or bought at an auto parts store?
Also whats the reason in removing the core plugs?

I have rebuilt rochester carbs but never 2 stroke carbs...

A standard screwdriver is apt to spread the soft orfice plug material, making it more difficult to get out . The more you try, the tighter it gets. You can make your own special screwdriver from any s'driver with a 3/16" shank. Cut off the business end and grind/file a new blade as shown. The sides must be parallel.

Core plugs are removed to get dirt out of the small holes behind them. You may not have any dirt in there, but you don't know till you look.

i made mine from a screwdriver with my belt sander. also, been told the the small straight blade on the orange handled, 4 in 1 husky screwdriver fits just right.

For the life of me I can't see why anyone would remove the orifices to do a carb job. They are all easily visible and with good lighting you can see if they are sparkling clean or not.

FWIW, I had one sitting in the drawer that I made for use on a V-8 carb, probably a Holly or something, that worked w/o mods.

I guess there's only so many ways to make a carb jet.
