Applied for and received a boat permit to Orient Beach State Park (Long Island, NY). They have a pilot program going that lets you anchor near shore and use the beaches. This is a rather remote area so it should afford the peace and quiet that we are looking for (lots of restrictions - no fires, no kites, no booze, no boom boxes). It is a preserve with bird sanctuary so they are very protective of the environment.

I'll be visiting the park with the family in mid August. Hopefully will have some nice photos to share.

Here is a pic from the state parks department:

Tommays,

I called Orient Beach State Park office at the number on their website.

http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=50

Spoke to a park ranger who mailed me a package of info and the form to return. Took less than two weeks to get the permit back and all it cost was a self addressed and stamped envelope! Plus you don't pay to get into the park!

I launch from Sag Harbor Marina. Its about 5 minute drive from where I stay on North Haven.

The N.Y. Park System, as some ome who frequents many of them, I often hear (to myself, of course) the twilight zone music. Thinking You have just entered the No-Zone, Here is a man entering the Park, Beautiful to see, but w/ a twist. Here he can not, insert list of restrictions. He has just entered the No-Zone

I have not explored the LI sound yet. How rough is it out there on a fair weather day?

Tommays,

Where do you launch from? Or do you still keep a mooring?

When I was just a little kid, my parents took us kids to my Grandparents little summer house they were slowly building in Noyac (remember bare sheetrock for years). Grandpa always had an old boat and sometimes Dad would rent a aluminum 12 footer, stick his 6hp Sears on it and we would go exploring the Peconic Bays. Now I like to take my family there to show them the same things. Something makes me think it's important to do these same things, go to the same places with my wife and kids. Hopefully, they will do the same with their kids.

honest answere the north shore is such a PITA to launch from i use the state ramps on the south shore or i would rather drive from commack to a place like strongs which must be over 60 miles each way

but at least i can leave my car and trailer there overnight and its safe at the state ramps you get a ticket and at the town ramps you might get a busted up car

all the ramps on the north shore that i no of are town controled and they wont even let a non local use them

i can launch on smithtown ramps for 60 dollars for the season which when you figure the tax money i pay is crazy

but i can't use port jeff ramps at any price

which means you have to start calling private boatyards and see how bad there going to stick you

tommays

Why can't you use the Port Jefferson ramps? Do you have to be a resident?

resident or 40 dollars a day non-res i moved from the town of brookhaven which controls that ramp

to the town of smithtown which controls kings park and the one near stonybrook both of which are good ramps with low tide issues

kings park is a FAST MOVEING (6+ mph) tidal river with nothing blocking the flow on the ramps

i use to launch at port jeff but just picture towing your boat through downtown with the ferry traffic and when you get there all the trailer parking spots are full

port jeff is a really good place to launch except for the crowds on land and the water getting to the sound

tommays
